Personnel: Daniel Seeff (bass guitar). Audio Mixers: Djinji Brown; Frank Correa; Mister Khaliyl; The Alchemist . Audio Remixer: Charlemagne . Photographer: Kareem Black. Tommy Boy Music, a player in the rap game from the very start, once again hits the streets with HIP HOP 101. This hard-hitting compilation features 14 tracks of pure street credibility that get down to the hip-hop basics: beats, rhymes, and style. Though laced with such well-known acts as Masta Ace ("Splash"), Defari ("Blast"), and De La Soul (featuring Camp Lo on "So Good"), HIP HOP 101 also contains some real underground gems. Offerings from such acts as Talib Kweli & Tony Touch ("What They May Seem"), Strick & Royce The 5'9" ("It's Over"), and Jigmastas ("Let Me Hear it") will surprise those not up on the underground scene. Natural Elements' "Live it Up, Part 2," Medina Green's "Pockets," and a remix of Deadly Snakes' "Culebras" also shine. Headz should be pleased to hear that De La Soul executive produced the project.

商品の紹介

Q (6/00, p.119) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...It's bright, upbeat and contains some genuine star potential....And like much of this set, it shame the professionally po-faced nature of its competitors." CMJ (5/00, p.73) - "...This isn't a De La Soul record, but it's solid - when Royce The 5'9" flows, 'I'm 'bout to blow the f*** up,' at the end of 'I Won't Be', he's probably right." The Source (5/00, p.230) - "...[Will] jumpstart your education...about the so-called underground....Nothing fails here...the album's grade is on a positive curve..." Melody Maker (4/11/00, p.47) - 4 stars out of 5 - "An ace compilation of underground hip-hop covering a host of styles with something for everyone..." NME (Magazine) (4/22/00, p.40) - 7 out of 10 - "...De La Soul-masterminded launch pad for new Tommy Boy-affiliated rappers....Maseo's 'Words & Verbs' and the tense, 'It's Over' by Strick & Royce The 5'9" suggest there's certainly enough potential...to break new rap superstars..."
