In the trendy, flavor-of-the-month world of hip-hop, labels and artists come and go at an unsettling rate. That's why the longevity and consistency of Tommy Boy Records is so remarkable; the label managed to maintain both it's commercial success and artistic quality level for about ten times the length of the average rapper's career. This four-volume series commemorates the label's first fifteen years with a collection of their biggest and best. One of the keys to Tommy Boy's success is their reliance on hooks and accessibility--those two essentials of pop music--instead of empty attitude. This approach is well represented here.
The final volume of the series kicks off in an uncompromising fashion with Apache's "Gangsta Bitch," but in true Tommy Boy fashion it's followed by two stylistically diverse cuts, Naughty By Nature's crowd-pleasing, anthemic "Hip-Hop Hooray" and De La Soul's typically introspective "Potholes in My Lawn." RuPaul brings about another gear-shift while simultaneously upping the kitsch factor with his/her dance hit "Supermodel (You Better Work," the tune that graced a thousand catwalks. Coolio closes out the album in grand style with hip-hop classic "Gangsta's Paradise."
