Considering the fact that three of the five tracks on the Submission to the Master EP appear on the Pulsars' self-titled full-length, it's somewhat of a mystery why the EP comes across as more guitar-focused and less slickly produced than the album. On tracks like "Chicago Swingers," which drops some of the Pulsars' new-wave tech feel in favor of jangling guitars, this slightly different approach works well, sounding a bit more honest and intimate than the album work -- but even with the occasional alteration, the Pulsars' M.O. is all about combining pop structures (a la Pixies) with slick production and new-wave gadgetry, and the EP doesn't stray from this formula too much. And since the majority of the songs wound up on the band's first full-length, there's not much on Submission to the Master that will appeal to anyone but the band's true collectors and fans. ~ Nitsuh Abebe
