Personnel: Dave Trumfio (vocals, guitar, keyboards, programming); Mike Hagler (guitar, organ, background vocals); Paul Mertens (tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone); Herb Alpert (trumpet); Gary Schepers (tuba); Harry Trumfio (keyboards, drums, percussion, programming, background vocals). Audio Mixers: Dave Trumfio; Ken Sluiter; Mike Hagler. Recording information: Kingsize Sound Laboratories, Chicago, IL; Sound on Sound Recording, NY. Editor: Scott Hull . Photographer: Marty Perez. Unknown Contributor Roles: Ralph Syverson; The Pulsars. Arranger: Tony Visconti. Chicago producer Dave Trumfio's style has always revolved around adding a dose of new-wave techie geekiness to the pop structures the Pixies added to the rock canon -- nowhere is this more clear than on the self-titled release by the Pulsars, the band consisting of brothers Dave and Harry Trumfio. There's not a second of the recording that's designed to deliver anything but pure pop hooks -- the album's first single, "Tunnel Song," begins with a strong bass riff straight off of the Pixies' Trompe le Monde, then drifts into a hooky chorus with an almost Def Leppard sheen to it. When the brothers' gadget-heavy pop songs work, they're quite pleasant -- but unfortunately, the pop hooks come along with slick, polished production that occasionally threatens to turn the sound to cheese. ~ Nitsuh Abebe

商品の紹介

Rolling Stone (5/1/97, p.53) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...Drawing equally from '60s Motown, '70s New Wave and '80s synth pop, they mix and match all three grooves....The result is an album at once derivative and oddly clever..." Spin (4/97, pp.155-156) - 8 (out of 10) - "...the Pulsars music is wimp rock by definition, only it's not a bit wimpy when you actually listen to it. There's definitely a formula, too--mid-tempo beat, with those huge choruses and flourishes playing kissy-poo with whiny-whimsical lyrics..." Option (7-8/97, pp.123-124) - "...the Pulsars piece together their new wave sci-fi from familiar spare parts....reference-laden indie techno toys with overstepping eccentricity into self-parody....But the electronic patchwork proves more charming than wincing..." Musician (6/97, p.84) - "...there's a genuine respect for the whole daunting art form of pop standard composition....The Trumfios understand the discipline involved, and have methodically calculated a sing-song silly bubblegum record that's as alluring as anything in the ABBA catalog..."
