This is a re-issue of the STAND EASY album, along with the PREVIEW EP.
Like the 1993 compilation OPENING MOVES, STAND EASY & PREVIEW is a CD re-issue of early Battlefield Band material. The set includes two albums, the first of which, 1979's STAND EASY, was the band's fourth release and the first to feature the Highland pipes of Duncan MacGillvray. The instrumental line-up on this record defined the Battlefield Band's sound for the next 20 years. The ceremonial bagpipe intro to the opening medley "Miss Drummond of Perth/Fiddler's Joy/Traditional Reel" sets the stage for what this ensemble does best: traditional Celtic music performed with fresh energy and superior musicianship.
The second album included here is 1980's PREVIEW, a promotional EP released in a limited pressing when the band was in the middle of label and personnel changes. Though multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Jamie McMenamy is absent from these recordings, PREVIEW features the team of Jim and Sylvia Barnes. Sylvia lends her pure, plaintive tone to "Rantin' Rovin Robin," while Jenny Clark, who also plays dulcimer and cittern, sings solo on "Seven Braw Gowns" and contributes impeccable harmonies on group vocals such as "The Battle of Falkirk Muir." This release will appeal to fans of the Battlefield Band's more traditional material.
