Osymyso: Mark Nicholson A man (Mark Nicholson); a plan (cheeky, sample-stuffed weird-beat techno); no canal, alas. Welcome to the Pailindrome--please enter through the "EXIT" door. Taking a page from the rapid-fire sight-gag cues of "Police Squad!," Nicholson lobs obscure sonic jokes, jabs, and japes at the listener in a veritable hail of zingers. Some are bound to hit, right? Plenty fall flat as flapjacks, but the sheer volume makes Osymyso's overall hit/miss ratio impressive. When Osymyso's on target, PAILINDROME is a laff-a-second mix of puns and quirkily melodic sample-scrounging electronica. "A Dog! A Panic in a Pagoda" squeezes criminal quantities of canine wordplay into four brilliant minutes, while the daffy "God, a Red Nugget! A Fat Egg Under a Dog" delivers the killer punchline. "On Osymyso? No!," "Say Something Stupid," and the tipsy, pineapple-scented Plunderphonics of "Sod It, I'm Off to Hawaii!" live up to Osymyso's clever titles. The ethno-techno goulash of "Won't Lovers Revolt Now?" and the tone poem "When Bob Met Hannah" disguise more cerebral guffaws. It helps that Nicholson has the sampler chops and melodic sweet tooth to back up his overactive funny bone. A choice remedy for the doldrums brought on by one too many doses of self-serious techno minimalism.
