Liner Note Authors: Dave Burke ; Alan Taylor. The pop-surf era, which lasted from the very end of the 1950s until the Beatles et al., hit in the early to middle part of the next decade, and was the last Golden Age for instrumental pop hits in America, as combo after combo across the country (many of these bands were seriously landlocked geographically) grafted twanging and echoing electric guitars to R&B rhythms. For every surf-styled hit that made it to national radio, hundreds more such sides never became more than local or regional hits. This set, the first of a series, collects 14 of these fascinating obscurities, including "Night Ride" by the Ramrods, "Jack the Ripper" by the Valiants, and "Don't Call Me Fly Face" by the Reekers. ~ Steve Leggett
