Nearly ten years on from Loco Motive, Cowboy Troy digs in his heels on hick-hop with his third album, King of Clubs. Working once again with John Rich, the leader of the MuzikMafia who played a big role in the discovery of the rapper, Cowboy Troy updates his signature stomp by adding in a few vocoders, electronics, and heavier guitars, along with finding more space for guest artists. In the case of lead single "Drink Drank Drunk," there are a few too many cooks in the kitchen, and with Big & Rich and Big Smo aboard, there isn't much space for Troy, while "Buzzed Up" is possibly the most urban Troy ever has been, a not-bad bid for R&B play that nevertheless doesn't quite fit with the rest of the album. This problem is rectified elsewhere on the record, usually when the hick element of the hick-hop equation is emphasized: the Rawhide interpolations of "Giddy Up" and the riotously silly boot-scootin' wannabe dance-crazy "Rope It Off" showcase a showman who, after a decade, knows his strengths, and even if he'll dabble with the modern sounds for a hit, he's not about to let the times change him. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
