A superior cool-toned guitarist from Europe whose style is not that far from that of Jimmy Raney, Barney Kessel, and Joshua Breakstone (to name just three straight-ahead bop players), Peter Almqvist holds his own with veteran pianist Horace Parlan, bassist Yasuhito Mori, and drummer Raymond Karlsson on this excellent outing. The quartet plays two songs apiece by Almqvist and Parlan, McCoy Tyner's "Blues for Gwen," and three veteran standards. Few surprises occur, but the many solos of Almqvist and Parlan are consistently satisfying and swinging, making this an easily recommended set for straight-ahead jazz collectors. ~ Scott Yanow
