Complete with multiple cuts, including alternate takes and false starts, the track list of the CDs in the CONTROL BOOTH series offer two, three and even four takes of each song in succession. The multiple versions enable listeners to concentrate more intently on Holiday's vocal stylings. Though her performances do not differ much from take to take, the repeated exposure undoubtedly evinces subtleties and shadings missed on the once-through. In these last Columbia sessions, Holiday was already changing her timbre and delivery with a darker mood and slower phrasing, without abandoning the precision and nimble inflections of her '30s work. Definitive performances of her best-known songs, "All Of Me," "God Bless The Child" and "Love Me Or Leave Me," among others, are placed alongside exquisite lesser-known gems like "I'm In A Low Down Groove" and "Jim." Even with the caveat of a sometimes frustratingly repetitious track list, the CONTROL BOOTH SERIES is an outstanding listen.
