SHAKE covers a little-remembered era of the late career of the Shadows of Knight. By late 1968, the Chicago blues-punk quartet hadn't had a hit since their classic version of Van Morrison's deathless "Gloria." At the time, the next big thing in pop music was bubblegum, and nobody did bubblegum better than Super K Productions, headed by producers Jerry Kasenetz and Jeff Katz, who had spearheaded the movement with defining early hits by the Ohio Express and the 1910 Fruitgum Company, among others. The Shadows of Knight were the first and only band for whom Kasenetz and Katz produced a full album. SHAKE reissues those tracks, largely the work of Super K's lead songwriter, Joey Levine, with the addition of the original minor hit single version of "Shake" and its B-side, the quintessential bubblegum song "Run Run Billy Porter."
