This CD, the group's sixth release and fifth for Stomp Off, celebrates the tenth anniversary of Paris Washboard, a quartet comprised of Alain Marquet on clarinet and bass clarinet, trombonist Daniel Barda, pianist Louis Mazetier and Gerard Bagot on washboard. They mostly perform fresh and consistently exciting renditions of well-known songs from the 1920s, including "Wolverine Blues," "Limehouse Blues," "Way Down Yonder In New Orleans" and "Who's Sorry Now," but the unusual instrumentation and the heated ensembles make the songs sound brand new. Marquet and Barda make for a perfect team, even turning "Love for Sale" into classic early jazz. Highly recommended. ~ Scott Yanow|
