This is a rather unusual Jelly Roll Morton "revival" date. Rather than bring back the songs from the pianist-composer's classic period in Chicago (1926-1927), drummer Pam Pameijer and his notable octet (which also includes cornetist Peter Ecklund, Billy Novick and John Otto on woodwinds, trombonist Jim Snyder, pianist Ray Smith, Howard Alden on banjo and guitar, and Vince Giordano on tuba and string bass) perform 19 selections from Jelly Roll's more erratic New York years (1928-1930). Although they use some of the same frameworks that were utilized on Morton's recordings, in most cases the solos are much different and often superior to the originals. The repertoire is filled with obscurities including "Oil Well," "Deep Creek," "Try Me Out," "Primrose Stomp," and "Mushmouth Shuffle," and the performances overall do great justice to Morton's music.
