Paris Washboard is a hot French jazz quartet comprised of clarinetist Alain Marquet, trombonist Daniel Barda, pianist Louis Mazetier and Gerald Bagot on washboard. On six of the 14 selections on their Stomp Off CD, the group welcomes guest trumpeter Peter Ecklund and seven songs add the tuba of Gerald Gervois but, even when it is a bare quartet, the group is quite self-sufficient. Marquet's strong clarinet playing provides a solid lead while trombonist Barda blends in quite well. This exciting group alternates obscurities such as "Cushion Foot Stomp" and "Loving" with spirited versions of such tunes as "12th Street Rag," "Truckin"' and "Winin' Boy Blues." This is an easily overlooked sleeper that is highly recommended to Dixieland fans. ~ Scott Yanow|
