Chicago-born-and-bred minister Maceo Woods has led one of the nation's most dynamic gospel choirs since 1960. These recordings made for Stax Records' Volt subsidiary in 1969 and 1970 capture his magnificent 32-voice Christian Tabernacle Choir at its popular peak, rocking the room like a big band on uptempo numbers and hamonizing with such amazing breath control that they end up sounding like one huge church organ. Included in this marvelous 18-track collection (taken from Woods' original Hello Sunshine and Step to Jesus albums) is the title track, an optimistic piece of progressive gospel that crossed over to the secular charts and became a staple of choir repertoires across America. Another highlight is an extended organ instrumental version of "Amazing Grace," a huge seller when Woods originally recorded it in 1954.
