Recorded between 1954 and 1956. Includes liner notes by Billy Vera. Compiled and produced for reissue by Billy Vera (1990). Digitally remastered by Kirk Felton (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley). The Turks are also known as The Hollywood Flames. Audio Remasterer: Kirk Felton. Liner Note Author: Billy Vera. Recording information: Hollywood, CA (09/04/1954-07/24/1956). Dolphin was a pretty casually run R&B label back in the '50s, and these tapes from the vaults reveal a wealth of vocal group treasures with little, if any, documentation. With names of obscurity, like the Hollywood Arist-O-Kats, the Turks aka Hollywood Flames (two different versions of this West Coast one-shot group), Grady Chapman and the Suedes, the 5 Bars, the Ebonaires, Bobby "Baby Face" Byrd and the Birds, and Clyde "Thin Man" Tillis, this is no hit fest by any stretch. But the music, as unknown as it is, is all top-drawer, and if raw West Coast doo wop is your cup of tea, then this set is heartily recommended. ~ Cub Koda
