Little Jimmy Scott's stint as vocalist with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra put him on the musical map. He next signed on with bandleader Paul Gayten. This live set features Gayten's band and was recorded in 1951 in New Orleans at Rip's Playhouse. Scott's voice is a constant marvel, and the set choices and the live ambiance of the club make palpable the experience of witnessing a regional band performing in front of a hometown crowd. Though recorded on just one microphone, the performance is lively and rich with character. Scott and the band play a mix of then-recognizable standards and more contemporary numbers. Scott sings five of the album's songs and tenor saxophonist Sam Butera also guests on two instrumental selections.
