Released more than 20 years after the formation of the Fleshtones, MORE THAN SKIN DEEP once again returned the band to the forefront of American power pop. Opening with the brilliant "I'm a Sissy," the record gets off the blocks running. Though only 33 minutes long, this record manages to pack in more catchy riffs, crunching percussion, and cheerful snarling than most other bands would be capable of in an entire career. One caveat: About half of the tracks seem to have the main vocals coming over one channel. Whether this was intentional or not (the band produced it itself) is unclear, but it is a tad irritating.
"Smash Crash," about being locked out of the house away from your records, and "God Damn It," about being broke and on tour, are punchy rockers recalling the glory days of bands like Creation. "Blow Job" is a two-minute instrumental highlighting Gordon Spaeth's alto saxophone and Peter Zaremba on roller-rink keyboards. "Dance With the Ghoulman" works a Cramps-like vein, though it is substantially less hysterical. The capper, though, is the hyperactive "Medley: My Kinda Lovin' / The Crossroads Are Coming," which features a singalong chorus, fuzzed-out bass, and some smoking guitar work from Keith Streng.
