On her second major-label album, Lisa Cerbone turns her storyteller's eye to the difficult emotional terrain of adulthood, once again sifting through dark moods and complicated relationships in a little-girl voice that nearly belies the heaviness of her lyrics. Cerbone's forte is her ability to take one step back and tell her stories with a sense of detatchment, getting to the heart of her characters with vivid, ordinary details. In "Stalls When It's Not Warm," she sings, "Numbered nights/Numbered days/You sit on the back porch and watch them fade/A white van you take to work/A brown door on the driver's side--it's bent/The van makes all kinds of noise and stalls when it's not warm." Cerbone's breathy soprano can reach heights of intensity when she wants it to, and it is always pretty, layered over folky alternative-rock guitar arrangements.
