Liverpool's Sam Mitchell was one of England's most gifted blues guitarists; he played with everyone from Alexis Korner to Rod Stewart, in addition to maintaining a solo career. His first solo album, 1976's BOTTLENECK/SLIDE GUITAR, shows Mitchell to be a master of the bottleneck style, with a strong grounding in Delta blues slide playing (he works up some nice versions of Robert Johnson and Elmore James tunes here), but it also finds him equally adept at fingerpicking. In fact, for all the album's bluesy focus, the quirky opener, "Ambidextrous March," sounds like it could have come from a contemporaneous Leo Kottke release.
