This excellent 16-track compilation covers the first 11 albums by the finest of the British folk-rock acts of the '70s, Steeleye Span. Formed by ex-Fairport Convention bassist Ashley Hutchings, the band is arguably more consistently entertaining than its friendly Fairport rivals. Steeleye Span has been a folk-rock supergroup for decades. The selection on PORTFOLIO is balanced between fan favorites such as "All Around My Hat" and "Saucy Sailor," and the band's excellent electric versions of traditional ballads such as "Black Jack Davy" and "Sligo Maid." Sprightly polkas and reels such as "New York Girls" are also included. PORTFOLIO is an excellent introduction to this important group.
