Steeleye Span's sixth album, 1974's NOW WE ARE SIX, is one of the prolific and ever-changing group's most pop-oriented efforts. Not only was the album co-produced and mixed by Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson, it features a cover of Phil Spector's "To Know Him Is to Love Him" complete with a sax solo by David Bowie!
The rest of the album mixes the band's traditional English folk ballads with a heavy rock sound, particularly on "Seven Hundred Elves" and the powerhouse "Thomas the Rhymer." Elsewhere, oddities like the riddling title track and a bizarre but lovable version of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star," that features the band's male members singing in childlike falsetto, hint at the humor that permeates all of Steeleye Span's best work. While not the band's poppiest album--that would probably be ALL AROUND MY HAT--NOW WE ARE SIX is a good introduction for rock listeners with minimal exposure to British folk music.
