Bill Laswell wears many hats--producer (Iggy Pop, Yoko Ono, Bootsy Collins), bass player (Golden Palominos, free-jazz supergroup Last Exit), collaborator (with such as John Zorn, Pete Namlook and Mick Harris), composer/conceptualizer and remix wizard (his treatments of Miles Davis' 1968-71 music PANTHALASA). Here, he applies his remixing skills to a selection of classic and neo-classic Irish folk sounds from the Shanachie label's rich catalog.
At times, the pure and plaintive Gaelic quality of the source material shines through, as with Jerry O'Sullivan's pipes-and-harp "Wendel's Wedding" and Solas' "La Bruxa." Other times, very traditional flute tunes like Matt Malloy's "The Hare in the Heather" become the basis for an ethereal, swirling techno-tinged rave ballet. Laswell uses studio technology to either accent the mood of mystery and/or melancholy of the "source" material, or turn the material on its head entirely. This album is not for those who like their folk "untainted," but if you're in the mood for the (delicate) clashing of deep-rooted folk sounds and modern technology, EMERALD AETHER will make a novel and fascinating listen.
