The music of Paris-based singer/guitarist Henri Dikongue is a scintillating blend of styles and sounds. Influenced by his native Cameroon's traditional rhythms, French singer Charles Aznavour, salsa, samba, reggae, and American jazz and blues, Dikongue's sound is both pensive and joyous, provocative and comforting. His lyrics address repression and racism but the tone of the songs points to the resilience and compassion of which the human spirit is capable. "Ndolo" has lovely picked acoustic-guitar playing reflecting both Brazilian and Anglo-American styles and robust jazz-tinged saxophone. "Nama Poula Ndena" is full of bubbling, spirited South African dance rhythms, and the yearning "Alasso" has a pleasant reggae tinge mixed with a touch of Quiet Storm-type pop. Creative, heartening, and thoughtful, WA is a perfect album with which to unwind.
