Liner Note Author: Brian Cullman.
Greatest Hits is a compilation from the Sabri Brothers, a pair of qawwals from Pakistan who had been performing for some 40 years or so by the time of this album release. The Sabris are perhaps lesser known in many circles than Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's party, but they have much of the same ability. Their voices seem to strain rather more when attempting to carry a note the way Nusrat reveled in, but they attempt to make up for it by being somewhat more experimental in their instrumentation, most noticeably with the inclusion of an oboe of some sort within the backing group. The harmonium, tablas, and claps that are requisite to the music are all present and provide the normal backdrop for the music. Really, the vocal abilities (and more probably, the mastering of the recordings) of the Sabris is somewhat lesser than Nusrat's work or Rahat's, but their soul is still in the music. There is more middle-range vocal work and less drawn-out passages. There is also somewhat less of the rapid-fire spitting of words that was one of the specialties of the Fateh Ali Khan parties. Still, the abilities that are necessary to deem the Sabris as masters of the form are all there. To put it simply, just because Nusrat was an uber-phenomenon doesn't exclude the Sabris from being masters in their own right, even if they may be overshadowed in general. ~ Adam Greenberg
