Until recently, there was little documentation of the music of Burma. This disc, part of a multi-volume set on Shanachie, is the perfect introduction to the unique music of this Southeast Asian country. While showing obvious influences from China and India, Burmese music is distinctive. Many of its instruments-the pat waing (a circle of 21 tuned drums), the saung gauk (a Burmese harp), and the maung zaing (a set of small, knobbed gongs) among them-are indigenous to the country.
Songs alternate between instrumentals and vocal numbers (on which the singing is quite lovely and emotive). Styles range from the regal precision of ancient royal court music to riotous soundtracks for festivals and celebrations. With a broad palette that touches on everything from gorgeously sweet love songs and insistent, rhythmically propulsive statements, WHITE ELEPHANTS AND GOLDEN DUCKS reveals the treasures of a long-concealed and glorious musical tradition. A must for world music fans.
