Huun-Huur Tu brings rural Tuvan folk songs to the world stage, employing a technique commonly referred to as "throat singing." In this vocal approach, tones are split into several parts (most notably a bass drone and a high-pitched whistle) deep within the throat. This quartet is one of the world's best-kept secrets, led by the spectacularly talented Kaigal-ool Khovalyg--who is often referred to as the Pavarotti of the East. The band also plays a variety of stringed and percussive instruments indigenous to Siberia, including the doshpuluur, the kargyraa, and the xoomei. The playing and singing engenders organic dialogs, evoking pastoral scenes of remote villages, fields, passing birds, and cantering horses. Because Tuva is located in the part of Siberia nearest to China, the angular melodies and spacious structures of its native music are closest to the Asian conception of music. The group's ghostly sound pushes the wistful folk melodies into alien, mind-expanding territory. Huun-Huur Tu's other albums give an equally strong sense of the group's magic, but EAGLE is among its most consistent offerings. Recent collaborations between these musicians and artists like John Cale and Frank Zappa hint that Tuva's musical marvels won't stay secret for long.
