Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan sings qawwali music, a devotional Sufi tradition, which weds poetry with tabla drumming and the swirling drone of the harmonium. On THE DAY, THE NIGHT, THE DAWN, THE DUSK, Ali Khan sings in a passionate, full-throated, tenor voice. All three tracks, "Yeh Jo Halka Halka," "Mera Piyya Ghar Aaya," and "Ni Main Jana Jogi De," revolving around the wonders of romantic love, are developed similarly. With each track, the rhythm intensifies and the call-and-response (between the soloist--in this case Ali Khan--and the chorus) builds to a peak. For both singers and audience to achieve this enlightened state is qawwali music's goal, and no one achieves this better than Ali Khan.
