Tommy Makem is one of the most popular folk singers in history. His recordings with The Clancy Brothers have become legendary, and his solo albums are equally compelling. On this 1993 Shanachie release, we hear Makem in concert. Unfortunately, we are not told where this music was recorded, but it is lovely nonetheless and each song includes a great deal of audience involvement. The audience sings along on each chorus with Makem and his quintet, and their participation reminds us that folk music is still rooted in community. The atmosphere of this concert is filled with jubilation and humor.
Songs such as "The Drunken Sailor," "Bonny Laddie, Hieland Laddie," "Paddy Kelly's Brew" and others are upbeat and feature Bob French's fine banjo playing. But Makem is clearly the main attraction of the show, and his thick-brogue voice stands out above the rest. Finally, soft Irish ballads such as "Come by the Hills" and "Skye Boat Song" add variety to this album. On these ballads, as Makem is wont to do, he sings in a lower register evoking the melodious (and beauteous) possibilities of these traditional songs.
