Solo performer: Norman Blake (vocals, guitar, Hawaiian guitar, fiddle, mandolin, banjo).
Recorded at Cedar House Studio, Arrington, Tennessee on October 9-11, 1996.
CHATTANOOGA SUGAR BABE was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album.
The extraordinarily talented multi-instrumentalist Norman Blake has been performing professionally since age 16. On CHATTANOOGA SUGAR BABE, Blake's consummate professionalism crackles throughout this superb collection of traditional and self-penned tunes. This is Americana with a capital A. Blake sings with sweet refinement, perfectly suited for this near-scholarly journey through American music. On the self-penned title track Blake accompanies himself on a menacing banjo as he warns of the lurking dangers of cocaine. On his weeping instrumental, "Dr. Edmundo's Favorite Portuguese Waltz," Blake accomplishes a marvelous trick--multi-tracking a Hawaiian guitar, mandolin and guitar and still sounding loose enough to fool a listener into thinking a full band is playing. He also breathes life into the chestnut "Dixie Flyer Blues."
Over the years Blake has accompanied premiere American singers and songwriters, including Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash. On CHATTANOOGA SUGAR BABE--Chattanooga is Blake's birthplace--he shows how powerful a master musician with an accomplished voice can be all by himself.
録音 : ステレオ (Studio)
