Williams began performing with the Ward Singers in the '40s, moving on to the Stars of Faith in the '50s. She finally struck out on her own in the '60s. From then on, she performed ceaselessly, her audacious, swooping style marking her as a true gospel original. By the time of this 1993 recording, her body had begun to suffer the ravages of the severe diabetes that would soon take her life, but you'd never know it from listening to her sing. The power of her voice is undiminished as she moves through these heartfelt statements of faith, frequently accompanied only by piano and organ. The sheer jubilance that's audible in her singing is indicative of both the strength of her faith and the sheer soulfulness of her style. Williams slips easily from one register to another, from a whisper to a shout, via the use of graceful glissandos and bluesy melodic turns. The lack of production here is a plus, as it puts Williams' voice front and center for maximum impact.
