Re-released and expanded on CD like its early Over the Edge counterparts, Pastor Dick is one of the best efforts in the continuing series, a hilarious vivisection of the kind of Christian radio programming which permeates America without ever gaining mainstream attention. With Lyons taking on the role of Pastor Dick himself, speaking in a soothing, weirdly friendly tone without ever stepping over completely into the realm of caricature, Negativland and its various guests go to town on any number of conventions of the genre. Shows ranging from 1982-1986 bolster the main program, edited together as one overall presentation. The ostensible reason for the broadcast is to raise money for Pastor Dick's secretary after having her purse stolen -- allegedly by Pastor Dick himself (perhaps explaining the off-mic death threat he allegedly receives at one point). With that as the innocent starting point, everything from phone calls from Satan and linguistic studies of the Hebrew and Greek words for "wine" to snippets of Mormon-created teen guidance records and whether or not a car named after a demon is anti-God step to the fore. As always, snippets of music from a variety of sources -- including some of the frankly gooiest and white-bread spirituals, '50s- and '60s-style -- gets strung behind the dramatic presentations and efforts, while phone callers contribute their own wisdom and confessions of sins, among many other things besides. (When it comes to the sins, people call up and confess, after which time Pastor Dick explains how much money they need to pledge and then drinks some champagne -- of course.) As with the other Over the Edge reissues, the bonus materials add to the fun, including a mock weekly church service guide (complete with donation envelope). That everything ends with a voice (or tape loop) saying, "F*ck you!" over 40 times seems perfectly appropriate. ~ Ned Raggett
