There are countless numbers of part-time stage bands throughout the United States that get together for the fun of it . Bruce Gates Jazz Consortium Big Band is one of the most professional and swinging. Led by lead trumpeter Gates, the orchestra mostly performs Mike Crotty arrangements on this enjoyable disc. During songs written by Ernie Watts ("Joyous Reunion"), Cedar Walton, Thelonious Monk, Lee Morgan ("Speedball"), Tom Kubis, and Herbie Hancock, plus an original and two standards, the band swings hard. Among the key soloists are tenor saxophonist Saul Miller, trombonist Rick Lillard, altoist Andy Axelrad (showcased on "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most"), pianist Wade Beach, and guitarist Rick Whitehead, although quite a few musicians have opportunities to be heard.
