Lloyd Cole's last album before an extended vacation spent raising his growing family in Manhattan and western Massachusetts, 1995's LOVE STORY is in many ways a return to the style of his three '80s albums with the Commotions. (That two key Commotions, guitarist Neil Clark and keyboardist Blair Cowan, play on the album makes the connection clear.)
After the stylistic experiments of his previous three solo records, LOVE STORY feels like the work of the same hyper-literate--at time self-consciously so--tunesmith who made neo-folk-rock delights like RATTLESNAKES and MAINSTREAM. The wry, at times wistful, lyrics are mature reflections on love and relationships, as befitting the title. A graceful cover of the Chet Baker standard "Let's Get Lost" works better than you might expect, but it's the originals, among Cole's finest, which are the real treat.
