This 1995 release found the Roches on a new label. They took the opportunity to deliver one of the finest albums of their career, one filled with songs that evoke a world-weariness. The spare accompaniment the Roches receive here is what has always served them best. All three sisters contributed individually penned songs, and all come through with some magic. Maggie's title song and Suzzy's "Home Away From Home" both touch on themes of home and belonging, while Terre's "Christlike" tempers the proceedings with an eloquently disenfranchised bit of romantic cynicism. While they've explored these subjects before, on CAN WE GO HOME NOW it is done with a deeper sense of loss, hope, and faith. This album is flush with memorable songs and a perfect starting point (along with the Roches' self-titled debut) for anyone unfamiliar with this trio.
