エドワード・エルガー(1857-1934)の3大オラトリオの1つであり、さらには英国の3大オラトリオの1つとも称されている「ゲロンティアスの夢」。
聖書ではなくヘンリー・ニューマン枢機卿の長編詩を題材とした「ゲロンティアスの夢」は、死への不安、恐れ、神と天使による魂の救済、浄化が描かれた大作であり、エルガーの最高傑作としても名高い。
元祖・英国音楽の伝道師リチャード・ヒコックスが、1976年から1991年までコーラス・ディレクターを務めたロンドン交響合唱団、そしてロンドン交響楽団との共演で遺した同曲屈指の名演である。
