Photographer: Stanley Rowin. The original Savages lineup broke up after the band's furious self-titled debut and a follow-up EP (DIG YOURSELF). The OW! OW! OW! sessions featured a new, more polished Savages ensemble. Things get off to a rousing start here with the band's take on Sid Prosin's "Rockin' the Mule," and from there, things never let up. Ben Vaughn's "Apology Line" (the only other piece of outside material) has a supple feel that Whitfield and his past cohorts never attempted. Saxophonist David Sholl is particularly adept at writing songs that push Whitfield's vocals into the stratosphere--just listen to "Girl From Outer Space." This ensemble took to the road in earnest, winning fans in the U.S. and Europe, particularly in France.
