This Inner City LP from 1980 has a sampling of Bobby Jaspar's early Vogue recordings. Recorded before Jaspar started doubling on flute, the 14 numbers feature the tenor man with four overlapping groups consisting mostly of French musicians, ranging from a pair of freewheeling small groups to a septet and a nonet with arrangements in the vein of Gil Evans and the Miles Davis Nonet. The cool-toned tenor is joined by such top players as pianist Henri Renaud, guitarist Jimmy Gourley, and bassist Pierre Michelot, with the writers including Gigi Gryce and Francey Boland. Fine music, but this release will be difficult to find. ~ Scott Yanow
