Tony Trischka's one-man exploration of the history of the banjo, World Turning is not for the bluegrass purist. The styles here vary as widely as the guests, from the dusty afternoon tone of William S. Burroughs' voice narrating the simple playing of "The Boatman's Dance/Over the Mountains" to the Violent Femmes helping out on "Down in the Cider House," which sounds remarkably like the Velvet Underground at times. In such an ambitious project, there are bound to be moments not agreeable to every individual's taste, but on the whole, this experiment is a success, with Trischka's grasp of his instrument complete. ~ Jeff Crooke
