Recorded in London in 1966. Personnel: John Surman (bass clarinet, soprano saxophone, baritone saxophone); Nisar Ahmad Khan (tenor saxophone); Peter Lemer (piano); Jon Hiseman (drums). English pianist Peter Lemer was in high demand as a session musician in free jazz circles in the 1960s, and his lone solo outing, recorded in 1966, proves why. A driving rhythmic player (he reminds us that the piano is, in fact, a percussion instrument), Lemer gets the wheels rolling for saxophonists John Surman and Nisar Ahmad Khan, who turn in some impressive solos. The compositions on LOCAL COLOUR are fairly grounded, providing ballast for the high-flown playing of Surman, Khan, and Lemer. This is an excellent, overlooked mid-'60s jazz gem.
