With their third release, the Juliana Theory embraced vocal harmonies and pop flourishes, fashioning a sound that helped distinguish their band from the rest of the burgeoning emo scene. The combination of "Into the Dark" and "Don't Push Love Away" proved to be one of the strongest openings of any Juliana Theory record, with both songs introducing minor-key verses before delving into anthemic, cathartic power chords. Even though the album's strongest cuts were rooted in pop/rock, Emotion Is Dead still delivered some hard-hitting, heavier cuts as well, particularly "To the Tune of 5,000 Screaming Children" and "Is Patience Still Waiting." Completing the diverse album were "You Always Say Goodnight, Goodnight," a piano-driven ballad, and "We're At the Top of the World," whose sha la la chorus demanded sing-along participation from the listener. Love may have been a better record, but Emotion Is Dead was the first to display the full reach of this band's ability. ~ Steven Losey
