Kris Kristofferson gets another thorough career overview courtesy of Salvo, whose 2013 collection, For the Good Times: The Best of Kris Kristofferson, is a 38-track retrospective of his '70s prime. This non-chronological collection stretches back to his 1969 debut and runs all the way until 1985, when he first teamed with Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Johnny Cash as the Highwaymen, and along the way, most of his classics are aired ("Me and Bobby McGee," "Help Me Make It Through The Night," "For the Good Times," "Sunday Morning Coming Down," "Loving Her Was Easier (Than Anything I'll Ever Do Again")), along with some -- but by no means all -- of his charting hits and a heap of deep album tracks along with some oddities, such as his version of "Michoacan" from Cisco Pike. Such left-field inclusions are the blessing and curse of For the Good Times, as they suggest the wooliness of Kristofferson's peak -- how he was an oddball outlaw who could also be seduced into the glamour of Hollywood -- but they do so at the expense of such necessary songs as "The Taker" and "The Pilgrim: Chapter 33," plus hits like "Josie" and "Loving Arms." Even with these omissions, this paints a good portrait of Kristofferson's peak, good enough to make it a recommended introduction. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
