Some of the songs on the PTG label's 18th Nighttime Lovers compilation should have fared better commercially. Among the standouts here: Oliver Cheatham's "Just to Be with You" (like his biggest hit, "Get Down Saturday Night," a collaboration with members of fellow Detroit artists One Way), Cherrelle's "Will You Satisfy" (one of the better, less-recognized ballads produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis), Brick's "Wide Open" (made with Ray Parker, Jr.), and indispensable session vocalist Fonzi Thornton's "The Leader" (with arranging and instrumentation from Chic's Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards). As usual, sound quality varies from track to track, and several cuts are obscure due more to mediocrity than to unjust exposure, but obsessive fans of early-'80s R&B will find much here that isn't easily obtainable on compact disc. ~ Andy Kellman|
