A fixture in San Francisco since the late '60s, Dan Hicks celebrated his 70th birthday by throwing a bash at the Davies club. He had his Hot Licks and he invited a bunch of his friends, including Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Van Dyke Parks, John Hammond, Rickie Lee Jones, and Harry Shearer. With all this star power in tow, it's little wonder that Live at Davies generates a considerable amount of good cheer, but for as nostalgic as this can be -- and it is, hearkening back not just to the glory days of Haight-Ashbury, but even further, as most of this is indebted to pre-war blues -- it's not a lament for the past, it's a loping and loopy party for the present. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
