After recording two albums for Metal Blade, Slayer switched to the larger Def Jam with Reign in Blood and began a lucrative association with producer Rick Rubin. While the production quality is superior to that of Show No Mercy and Hell Awaits, Slayer's sound didn't change -- the outfit still thrived on painfully harsh death metal. Dealing with Satanism, dismemberment, human sacrifice, and other grim subjects, Slayer's extremely dark lyrics are as intense as their music. Many death-metallers come across as more comic than anything, but not Slayer. These headbangers bring so great a sense of purpose to both their music and lyrics that bombastic, high-speed tales of evil like "Piece by Piece," "Altar of Sacrifice," and "Criminally Insane" are genuinely troubling. ~ Alex Henderson|
