One of the great British pop stars of the '60s, Sandie Shaw has never quite had the career-spanning retrospective she's deserved, but Salvo's 2013 set Long Live Love finally fits that bill. Running 26 songs over the course of a single disc, the compilation hits all the main highlights between 1964 and 1988, naturally concentrating on her '60s heyday. All but five of the songs here date from the '60s -- only one, "Maple Village," dates from the '70s -- but the coda of the Reid Brothers-written "Cool About You" and the two Smiths songs ("Jeane" and "Hand in Glove," both recorded with the Mancunian quartet) help usher this set out on the right note, illustrating Shaw's swinging legacy. Even with these hip footnotes, the bulk of Long Live Love remains in the '60s -- the hits "(There's) Always Something There to Remind Me," "I'd Be Far Better Off Without You," "Long Live Love," "Message Understood," "Tomorrow," "Nothing Comes Easy" -- and having all this on one disc illustrates just how deep her catalog was and why Shaw was considered the pinnacle of female '60s pop by many listeners. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
