On Soft Machine Legacy's 2013 studio album Burden of Proof, drummer John Marshall, guitarist John Etheridge, bassist Roy Babbington, and saxophonist/flutist/keyboardist Theo Travis prove they can be exploratory and adventurous, and also have a rollicking good time. The "legacy" of '70s-era jazz-rock Soft Machine can be heard in Etheridge's wide vibrato-laden phrasing and fleet-fingered chops, Travis' occasional delay-echoed and arpeggiated Fender Rhodes, and a spacy version of Hugh Hopper's "Kings & Queens." Meanwhile, "Pump Room" has a heavy boogie-rock beat along with its jazzy interludes and heated interplay between Etheridge and Travis, and the saxophonist wails away R&B style on the roadhouse jazz-blues-flavored "Pie Chart," drifting rather far afield from the Soft Machine oeuvre. ~ Dave Lynch
