Discovered in the same Irish bar that kick-started the career of James Morrison, multi-instrumentalist David Amar and vocalist Hannah Garner, aka Derby duo Miss 600, have issued a debut album, Buying Time, that largely eschews the acoustic soul of the grizzly-voiced frontman in favor of a sound that capitalizes on the current fondness for retro jazz-pop. Produced by Chris Bucknall and Robert de Fresnes, the melodic MOR of opener "Missing You" and the Motown-tinged "Money Can't Buy" could quite easily have fit onto the Brit Award winner's Undiscovered debut, but elsewhere, its 12 tracks recall the playful Radio 2-friendly fare of Caro Emerald and Paloma Faith, whether it's the funky clarinet-led single "Twist," the inspired Ennio Morricone-sampling "Is This Love?," or the infectious dancehall-tinged "Two to Tango," the latter of which features the joyous vocals of Maxi Priest. The album falters, however, when it strays from the ballroom and ventures into the cocktail bar, as while Garner's airy Sia-esque vocals display the same charm that made her previous solo a cappella performances such a YouTube hit, the wishy-washy melodies of the forgettable stripped-back torch song "Be Careful Where You Leave Your Heart," the bland double-bass-heavy "The Devil Looks Out for His Own," and the sophisticated but plodding balladry of the title track are too lightweight to make any lasting impression. Buying Time is a pleasant, if unspectacular, first stab at capturing some of the easy listening market, but there's little, as of yet, to suggest they will achieve the same meteoric rise as their big-break venue's most famous alumni. ~ Jon O'Brien

Rovi
