More previously unreleased Ellington from the vaults! This is from a very fine period in Duke's career. While most big band leaders from the Swing Era were stuck in the nostalgia trap, Ellington had a superb band and continued to pen and record thoughtful and inventive compositions through the '60s and into the '70s. Here he gives appreciative European audiences what they want--hits such as "Things Ain't What They Used to Be" and "Rockin' in Rhythm." He also delivers newer, extended compositions, like the 14-minute beauty "Ad Lib on Nippon," as well as lesser-known classics like Billy Strayhorn's "Blood Count." The recording quality is sharp, crisp and clear, capturing the tiniest nuances of the band. Highly recommended for fans of the Duke (and big bands), as well as those wanting a taste of late-vintage Ellington.
