Personnel: Red Garland (piano); Paul Chambers (bass); Arthur Taylor (drums); Ray Barretto (congas).
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on June 27, 1958. Includes liner notes by Doug Ramsey.
Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1992, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
This delightful 1958 recording languished on the shelves of Prestige records for almost 20 years, hence the title "rediscovered masters." Hopefully its re-release on CD will lead to the rediscovery of Red Garland, a master pianist and musician.
Garland is remembered mostly for his work as the solid pianist in The Miles Davis Quintet, but he really shines as the leader of his own trio. His touch is refined, he swings like hell, has great technique but employs restraint; and his improvisations are unpretentious and logical.
Here, his trio (Art Taylor plays drums and Paul Chambers, bass) is supplemented by Ray Barretto on conga. It's a great combination--Barretto subtly injects mambo rhythms into swing grooves on tunes like "Five O' Clock Whistle," "It Might As Well Be Spring" and "Blues In Mambo."
録音 : ステレオ (Studio)
